Bespoke Mechanical Gift Rigs & Practical Pop Effects for TJ Maxx’s “Behind All the Holiday Magic”

MACHINESHOP executed the custom practical special effects and mechanical opening rigs for TJ Maxx’s festive “Behind All the Holiday Magic” commercial campaign. Developed alongside leading industry creatives, this high-energy broadcast spot relies on dynamic, synchronized practical physics to bring holiday gifts to life, making them burst open and extend outward in-camera.

Our workshop brought the main whimsical stunts to life, managing the mechanical articulation of gift boxes to make them spring, telescope, and unwrap flawlessly on cue. The embedded campaign film and behind-the-scenes videos showcase the meticulous engineering, hidden pneumatic tracking, and live timing required to pull off these playful physical actions flawlessly without catching the mechanics on camera.

Advanced Mechanical Stunt Rigging & Practical Prop Manipulation

Actuating wrapped gifts to smoothly and predictably burst open with vibrant, automated life demands precise spring-rate calibration, hidden guidance mechanics, and highly coordinated timing:

  • Bespoke Gift Launch & Extension Rigs: Custom-engineering discrete mechanical assemblies inside the packaging to smoothly propel, twist, and extend products through mid-air on cue.
  • Live On-Set Object Articulation: Coordinating millisecond-precise manual triggers and mechanical releases by our special effects technicians to ensure the holiday gifts reveal themselves with energetic, lifelike movement.
  • Low-Profile Component Concealment: Designing ultra-thin internal framework, hidden hinges, and integrated power lines that disappear entirely under studio lighting and close-up camera passes.
  • Strict Take-to-Take Technical Continuity: Engineering a rapidly resettable mechanical framework, enabling the floor crew to execute fast scene reloads and maintain identical popping paths across multiple frames.
