Bespoke Mechanical Stage Engineering for Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

MACHINESHOP designed, engineered, and manufactured a series of highly complex structural stage automation systems for the spectacular “Wizard of Oz Stage Production”. Performed live aboard the groundbreaking Icon of the Seas, which is the flagship luxury ocean liner operated by Royal Caribbean, this project represents top-tier mechanical engineering within the international cruise line entertainment sector.

Working closely with the industry’s premier scenery fabrication partners, our special projects workshop delivered robust, heavy-duty mechanical assemblies engineered to perform flawlessly under demanding marine variables.

Advanced Marine-Grade Staging Deliverables & Automation

Executing automated stage stunts and rotating scenic assemblies at sea requires strict adherence to maritime safety standards, weight distribution parameters, and continuous-use structural integrity. Our team engineered and supplied four primary mechanical systems for the production:

  • Witch Lift Mechanism: Custom-engineering a high-capacity, automated stunt lift platform to execute dramatic vertical talent reveals safely.
  • Drawbridge Structural Rigging: Fabricating heavy-duty mechanical hinges and automated drive assemblies to raise and lower heavy scenic bridges on a live cue.
  • Kinetic Windmill Assembly: Developing internal motorized gearing systems to deliver smooth, variable-speed rotation for the iconic farm scenery.
  • Weathervane Motion Rig: Building responsive, low-profile directional rotators to handle localized atmospheric props with pinpoint precision.
