Behind the scenes
Bespoke Special Projects Fabrication for Channel 4’s “The Fountain of Filth”
MACHINESHOP engineered and fabricated the “Fountain of Filth”, a high-impact, 10-metre-wide experiential public art installation commissioned by Channel 4. Prominently displayed on London’s South Bank, this striking practical activation was created to promote Dirty Business, a hard-hitting factual drama series exploring Britain’s polluted waterways and sewage crisis.
The artistic focus of the build features custom-sculpted bronze-finished statues of men, women, and children inspired by real human stories of individuals affected by exposure to toxic waterways.
Advanced Mechanical Engineering & Fluid Dynamics
To bring the alarming reality of the campaign to life, our special projects team developed a completely bespoke liquid-pumping and distribution system integrated within the sculpture network. The technical execution required absolute control over fluid mechanics to ensure the machinery could run continuously in public view:
- 10-Metre-Wide Structural Rigging: A robust, large-scale outdoor basin engineered to completely retain and filter specialized liquid compounds safely.
- Bespoke Statues with Integrated Fluid Channels: Custom-fabricated internal piping concealed inside the bronze-look sculptures to drive continuous, high-volume fluid output.
- Controlled “Murky Water” FX: Formulating a realistic, safe, and non-toxic brown fluid mixture designed to simulate murky water and organic waste without clogging internal nozzles.
- High-Traffic Public Safety Systems: Integrated self-contained water loop mechanics built to comply with strict London South Bank environmental and public space safety regulations.
